Wicked Wizards is my Game Design senior capstone project! On a team of 38 people, I am the lead UI / UX designer as well as one of the project co-leads. Made in Unity, Wicked Wizards is a four player co-op game with elements of both first person shooters and tower defense. The evil wizards and are tasked with vanquishing oncoming hordes of unicorns.
We decided that a dichotomy between cutesy-pastel colors and evil, sinister wizards is a core mechanic of the game. To help illustrate this to the player, the game's UI should be a middle ground between these two ideas. To convey this, my suggestion was to implement themes of heavy metal into the game. The combination of evil wizards, fantasy environments, and vaguely occult themes reminded me of late 80's metal iconography, and felt it would make the game feel unique.
The game's UI style is a combination of the arcane, fantasy aesthetic and the overkill, metal aesthetic. Album iconography from bands like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Guns N' Roses helped inspire the game's logo.
Below are some color palettes used to set the game's mood, as well as some iterations of basic UI elements.
Before finalized UI assets can be created and put in the game, wireframes must be created. This involves making a rough sketch of what a screen will look like just to get the idea across, like these class select iterations.
Once the ideation process is done, I then create more detailed mockups digitally to see how they may look in game.
Wicked Wizards will feature multiple, unique playable classes similar to Overwatch or Valorant. The challenge will be making differences between these classes feel meaningful to the player. Below is some very early concept art I created for a few of the game's characters.
